The Packers logo, a musical history, and more

Did you ever wonder how the iconic Packers "G" logo came about? Wonder no longer, Packer fans and those who wish you were.

St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI -- which, by the way, has been home of the Packers' summer training camp for 55 years this summer (the longest continuous residence of any team anywhere) -- recently produced a brief video which tells the story.

It begins with then-St. Norbert College art student John Gordon and ends with the famous "G" logo. Mobile users can watch the video here.

Also, you'll find a link to St. Norbert College in our "Links" area in the righthand column of our home page. It's one of the top liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, some might argue the entire U.S. If you're visiting Green Bay for anything Packers related, be sure to drive a few miles south and check out the campus along the west bank of the Fox River. It's beautiful. And it's been part of Packers history for many, many years.


Packers History Set to Music. Wait...What???
It was bound to happen. As soon as the Packers Heritage Trail became a reality in the last year or so, somebody was going to get the bright idea to set Packers history to music. Well, OK, maybe it it wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind. But still, somebody eventually did think of it.

Courtesy of Let Me Be Frank Productions’ latest show, “The Packers Heritage Trail: Through Curly’s Eyes,” the audience travels back to the Packers 1932 season and the days of Curly Lambeau. As this article in the Green Bay Press-Gazette also notes, in addition to the show, Let Me Be Frank and C&M Marketing are putting together trolley tours of the Packers Heritage Trail hosted by one of the cast members. That could be fun. The show itself runs July 19 through Aug. 17 at the Meyer Theatre, 117 S. Washington St., Green Bay. Tickets are available via this link or by calling (920) 494-3401.

Desmond Bishop winds up in Minnesota
In the continuing line of Packers' castoffs who get gobbled up by the ViQueens in the hopes they can somehow win a Super Bowl (insert guffaw here), LB Desmond Bishop signed a deal with Minnesota recently. We wish Desmond the best. He was a good and hard-working player for the Pack and this writer, for one, wishes the Packers had hung on to him. Obviously, they made the decision that after his injury he might not be the player he once was. And considering the plethora of players the team has available at linebacker, they felt they could improve the situation by releasing him. So it goes in the business of football.

Anyone else here believe the Packers will make a return to the Super Bowl Champions stand before the ViQueens make it? Thought so.

Packers shareholders meet, players arrive for camp

Some of the more than 300,000+ shareholders of the Green Bay Packers gathered together in the lovefest at Lambeau today otherwise known as the Annual Shareholders Meeting. No, not all of them. Just some of them. Still, Packers President Mark Murphy opined that it might well have been the largest corporate meeting ever held in the U.S.

Shareholders heard about Board and staff personnel changes, the financial report (noted in an earlier post here), and some generalities from GM Ted Thompson about the team of last year and what to look forward to this year...without going into much detail, of course...don't want to tip your hand, after all. But that's OK. Thompson's earned the right to play it as he sees it. One of the things he did say, however, was that the Packers would not be the youngest team in the league for the first time in what seems like forever. There are enough veterans, now even including the second-year players, who have made and will continue to make contributions; any impact by rookies will be gravy, so to speak.

Of course, players arrive tomorrow for check-in and check-ups as training camp resumes. Yay. Oh yay, indeed. Don't need to say anything other than that at the moment.

A unique remembrance of Lombardi
St. Norbert College in De Pere, just south of Green Bay, has hosted the Packers' training camp since the time of Lombardi. It has released a unique remembrance of St. Vince himself, focusing on the man as well as the coach, as told by one of the priests at the college who knew him well. Check it out here.

Packer Fans: Are You Ready for Some Football?!

Silly question, isn't it? Of course fans of the Green Bay Packers are ready for football. We were ready for more football as soon as the Pack won Super Bowl XLV and brought the Lobmardi Trophy back to Green Bay. When you are a Super Bowl champ (or even a fan thereof) you can't wait to get back in the mode of winning another. And, oh, by the way, in case you haven't heard, the Packers are favored by many prognosticators to play in this season's Super Bowl versus the Patriots. There's even some analysis out there -- you can find it if you look hard enough, trust me -- that the Packers are a team, if not the team, best positioned to dominate over the next several years. Looking at the management, the coaching staff and the roster you'd be hard pressed to find a a better organization anywhere in football. Yes, I'm a homer and readily admit it. But there are plenty of folks out there besides yours truly saying the same thing. So there.

But first, we need the lockout to end. And, as I suggested here in my last post, I thought a deal would definitely get done by the end of this month. I'm sticking with that. The deal may come, as rumored, as soon as this weekend. Let's hope so. The Packers sure seem to think so: they're reportedly getting Ray Nitschke Field -- the Pack's training facility -- prepared for action. And St. Norbert College in De Pere, home going back to the 1950s for the Packers' training camp, is also making preparations as if camp will be starting on time.

So, let's be optimistic. There's too much money to be lost if this drags on. And when push comes to shove, that's usually what will get a deal done...the loss of real dollars in the bank account not dollars merely on paper.

New book details Lombardi-years' Packers and St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Press, De Pere, WI, has just released the first book under its imprint: “A Championship Team: The Packers and St. Norbert College in the Lombardi Years”. Why should Packer fans care about this? Well, because the Packers have been holding their summer training camps at St. Norbert College (SNC), just outside Green Bay, since 1958 and the days of Vince Lombardi himself. (You will find a link to SNC in the righthand column of this blog, by the way.)

According to news on the college's website, the book was the brainchild of SNC President Thomas Kunkel, who took over the helm of SNC in 2008. It wasn't long afterward that he started hearing Lombardi stories from the Rev. Rowland De Peaux, O.Praem., and others.

Kunkel eventually asked veteran Packers beat writer and sports journalist Cliff Christl to put togehter an oral history of the Packers training camps at SNC during the Lombardi years. “We were fortunate to have Cliff take on this project with us,” Kunkel is quoted as saying. “He knows the team, he knows the players and he knows the campus. He was the perfect person for the job.”

If you're interested in the book, it's available at the Packers Pro Shop and will be available in Shopko stores in Wisconsin and upper Michigan (a shout out to all you Yoopers!) in early November. The book will also be available at the new SNC bookstore in Todd Wehr Hall (for those in the neighborhood of De Pere) and as a featured item in the college’s online store.

The news release notes that the strong relationship between the Packers and St. Norbert College continues: "This past summer, Kunkel was elected to the team’s board of directors. Former Packers general manager Ron Wolf will be December’s guest on 'Conversations from St. Norbert College,' and Packers CEO Mark Murphy has contributed a guest editorial to the upcoming issue of St. Norbert College Magazine, in mailboxes next week.

"In addition, the Packers will be co-sponsoring the college’s second sport and society conference in 2012. And, of course, the team will be back on campus when next year’s training camp rolls around."

The book sounds like a terrific addition to the library for Packers fans. And...it's perfect for parties...and ideal for gifts!

Oh, and for those looking for a great small college for the kids, you won't do any better than St. Norbert College. Hey...if it's good enough for the Packers...

Packers legendary QB Bart Starr becomes a doctor

Well, an honorary kind of doctor, that is.

During graduation ceremonies yesterday at St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI (neighboring community to Green Bay), legendary Packers quarterback Bart Starr and his wife, Cherry, received Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees "in recognition of living as examples of the Norbertine value of service to their community," according to a news report in the Green Bay Press-Gazette about the ceremony.

No need to recount the on-field exploits and honors of the leader of the Glory Years Packers. The Hall of Famer didn't wait for retirement, however, to begin charting his works of charity. In 1965, Bart and Cherry were instrumental in helping found Rawhide Ranch, which is a faith-based, nonprofit, residential care center for troubled teen boys near New London, WI. The Starrs are still involved in fundraising and other activities for the Ranch. The Starrs have also been involved since the beginning (1970) with the Vince Lombardi Memorial Golf Classic and the Vince Lombardi Charitable Fund in its fight against cancer.

Good folks doing very good work indeed. Nice of St. Norbert College to recognize the Starrs' years of service to the wider community. What's so special about St. Norbert College? For those who don't know, it has hosted the Packers summer training camp since the days of Lombardi himself. And, it is also one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the Midwest if not the nation.

But the college's connection with the Packers runs deeper than just that. They are joining together to present “A Mirror of Our Culture: Sport and Society in America," a three-day event running May 26-28, that, according to the website, "provides opportunities for sports academics and professionals working in sports-related fields to network and to share their expertise about American sports." Among those attending and speaking: Paul Tagliabue, former Commissioner (CEO) of the National Football League, and Carl Vogel, Partner of SCP Worldwide, who will "give major addresses offering their perspective on 'Sports in America' and 'The Future of American Sports.' Dr. Robert Kustra, President of Boise State University, will be presenting 'Modern College Athletics: A View from the Top.' Also, Kevin B. Blackistone of ESPN’s 'Around the Horn' and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, will be speaking on 'Race and Sports in America.'"
