Packers vs. Bears Preview & Prediction - 100th Season Kickoff

It's the start of another exciting season of Green Bay Packers football. It's the best time of the year!

But this is not just any season. It's the Pack's 100th season!

Over the course of the first 100 seasons, the Packers have become the most-storied franchise in the NFL, if not in all of professional sports.

Green Bay has become Titletown. Thirteen world championships...Curly Lambeau, Johnny Blood McNally, Don Hutson, Vincent Thomas Lombardi, ALL the Glory Years Packers (Nitschke, Starr, Hornung, Taylor, Davis, Adderly, et al), Bob Harlan, Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, Brett Favre, Reggie White, Uncle Ted Thompson, Aaron Rodgers, Donald Driver...where does the list start and where does it stop when it comes to the Packers?

A big piece of this amazing team history, of course, concerns that team from south of the border: the ... eeeewwww ... Chicago Bears. Da Bearz. The longest running rivalry in all of football. The Pack leads this century-long dogfight 96-94 with 6 ties. Oh, in a more current timeframe, QB Aaron Rodgers is 15-4 against Chicago, and 8-1 at Lambeau Field. (How does that make you feel about the chances tonight, Packer fans?)

What do we expect this evening? The Packers are favored by 7 points. In an opening match such as this, where the starters on both teams haven't actually played much in the preseason, hard to tell. There are new coaches on both teams, including a new head coach in ChiTown, so how all that plays out...your guess is as good as mine. But since this is my blog, I'll give you my best guess right now.

The Prediction

Let's make this short and sweet, shall we? I know my good friend, Bill Da Bearz Fan, is waiting for my predication and I don't want to hold up his afternoon nap.

So here it is: Packers 27 - Bears 17.

A Postscript

I took the entire offseason off, as you can see from the date of the last post prior to this one. Like many fans, the wind was pretty much out of the sails after that clunker of a 2017 Rodgers-less season. Not an excuse, just how it was.

Didn't really cover the draft (was traveling at the time) or opine on it (thought it was a good draft for the new GM, though), OTAs, mini camp, summer training camp, preseason. Yes, I slacked off. So it goes. Hope to at least do weekly game posts and updates if they seem needed. Hope you'll check in once in a while. And thank you if you do so. Your readership is appreciated. Packers down Chargers, go into bye 6-0

At this point, Packers fans, it's a bit of old news that the Green Bay Packers beat the San Diego Chargers last Sunday, 27-20, in heart-stopping fashion, and in the process giving head coach Mike McCarthy his 100th regular season win. McCarthy now trails only the legendary Curly Lambeau for wins as Packers head coach. Congrats, Coach McCarthy. (Oh, by the way, Lambeau has 209 regular season wins.)

Behind a franchise record-setting performance from Chargers QB Philip Rivers (43 of 65 passes for 503 yards and two touchdowns without committing a single turnover), the Pack's defense was lit up like Otis on the Andy Griffith Show.

The Packers defense was on the field for roughly 40 minutes -- two-thirds of the available clock time -- trying to defend against one of the best pocket passers in the league. Kudos to Mr. Rivers for his performance. For even when the Packers did get pressure on him, which, to be fair, was quite often, he was still able to get the ball out courtesy of his quick release.

Still, while racking up all that yardage and roughly 40 more offensive plays than the Packers, the Chargers were only two for six in the red zone and, most importantly, still lost.

The final series for the Chargers was emblematic of the Packers defense on the day. With the Chargers having first and goal at the three yardline, the Pack held them out of the endzone on three straight plays with no gain, capped with the great pass break up in the end zone by rookie defensive back and first round pick, Damarious Randall.

Packers RB James Starks racked up 112 yards on 10 carries against the Chargers, including a 65-yard TD run...the Pack's longest TD run in almost seven years.

A depleted Packers offense continued to sputter -- but do enough -- to win. WR Davante Adams was held out once again and TE/WR Ty Montgomery was injured early in the game and is expected to also miss the Denver game following the bye week. RB Eddie Lacy was still hobbled by his lingering ankle injury (which may be worse than he or the Packers are letting on) and was ineffective on a few carries. In his place, James Starks had a great day, carrying 10 times for 112 yards including a spectacular spin-to-the-backside 65-yard touchdown run, the longest for the Packers in nearly seven years.

Other players also made plays. WR Jeff Janis made the most of his opportunities, catching two passes for 79 yards and making a huge hustle block downfield on Starks' TD run. Let's also not forget that short shovel pass from Aaron Rodgers to Janis on a scramble which turned into a 33-yard play down to the San Diego 20-yard line in the fourth quarter.

So, going into the bye weekend, the Packers are banged up and hoping to get healthy. Despite key injuries to key players, some season-ending, the Packers are 6-0 for just the eighth time in the team's long, long history. As this great article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes, "The first six Packers teams that began 6-0 all won World Championships. The 2011 Packers started the year 13-0, went 15-1 in the regular season, then lost in the NFC divisional playoffs."

So there is a long way to go in this 2015 season, Packers fans. In the next two games after the bye, the Pack goes on the road to take on the also undefeated Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers, followed by four divisional games. This is the heart of the schedule. While off to a great start, there are still lots of areas for improvement. But just imagine what this team could do if it was at 100 percent.

Packers' Lambeau Field now third largest stadium in NFL

With today's dedication of roughly 7,000 new seats in the south end zone of Lambeau Field, the Green Bay Packers now boast the third largest stadium in the National Football League, with seating for approximately 81,000 fans. When Lambeau Field opened in 1957, it was then known as City Stadium and had a seating capacity of 32,500 (the name was changed in 1965, when it was renamed in memory of Packers founder, player, and long-time head coach, Curly Lambeau, who died earlier in that year).

This latest expansion is the ninth since the stadium opened. It is now the largest stadium in Wisconsin, surpassing Camp Randall Stadium at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The height of the new viewing terrace, roughly 300 feet up in the stadium, makes it the highest point in Brown County, according to reports. One might well expect that there will be some differences in how the wind is experienced within the stadium, not to mention the sound of 81,000 Packer fans cheering the Pack on to another victory!

Today, the fans who were lucky enough get their seats in this new area and have their names removed from the waiting list, had a chance to meet their seats in person. Many took the opportunity to do so following the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Packers logo, a musical history, and more

Did you ever wonder how the iconic Packers "G" logo came about? Wonder no longer, Packer fans and those who wish you were.

St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI -- which, by the way, has been home of the Packers' summer training camp for 55 years this summer (the longest continuous residence of any team anywhere) -- recently produced a brief video which tells the story.

It begins with then-St. Norbert College art student John Gordon and ends with the famous "G" logo. Mobile users can watch the video here.

Also, you'll find a link to St. Norbert College in our "Links" area in the righthand column of our home page. It's one of the top liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, some might argue the entire U.S. If you're visiting Green Bay for anything Packers related, be sure to drive a few miles south and check out the campus along the west bank of the Fox River. It's beautiful. And it's been part of Packers history for many, many years.


Packers History Set to Music. Wait...What???
It was bound to happen. As soon as the Packers Heritage Trail became a reality in the last year or so, somebody was going to get the bright idea to set Packers history to music. Well, OK, maybe it it wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind. But still, somebody eventually did think of it.

Courtesy of Let Me Be Frank Productions’ latest show, “The Packers Heritage Trail: Through Curly’s Eyes,” the audience travels back to the Packers 1932 season and the days of Curly Lambeau. As this article in the Green Bay Press-Gazette also notes, in addition to the show, Let Me Be Frank and C&M Marketing are putting together trolley tours of the Packers Heritage Trail hosted by one of the cast members. That could be fun. The show itself runs July 19 through Aug. 17 at the Meyer Theatre, 117 S. Washington St., Green Bay. Tickets are available via this link or by calling (920) 494-3401.

Desmond Bishop winds up in Minnesota
In the continuing line of Packers' castoffs who get gobbled up by the ViQueens in the hopes they can somehow win a Super Bowl (insert guffaw here), LB Desmond Bishop signed a deal with Minnesota recently. We wish Desmond the best. He was a good and hard-working player for the Pack and this writer, for one, wishes the Packers had hung on to him. Obviously, they made the decision that after his injury he might not be the player he once was. And considering the plethora of players the team has available at linebacker, they felt they could improve the situation by releasing him. So it goes in the business of football.

Anyone else here believe the Packers will make a return to the Super Bowl Champions stand before the ViQueens make it? Thought so.

Thanksgiving Day Drippings

Upon further review...that headline doesn't sound so good after all...kind of disgusting, really. But anyway...

What are the things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Day as fans of the Green Bay Packers?

• That we are fans of the most-storied franchise in all of sports.
• That our team plays in the best stadium in all of football: Lambeau Field.
• That there are Packers fans all across the world with whom you can shout "Go Pack Go!"
• That the Packers are a community-owned team, with no ego-maniacal owner to manipulate the fans, the players, or the city itself.
• 13 World Championships...more than any other NFL franchise.
• Curly Lambeau.
• Vince Lombardi.
• The Glory Years Packers.
• The Lambeau Leap.
• The reigning NFL MVP: Aaron Rodgers.

New Packer tailgate option: Curly Lambeau's Cottage!

If you want a truly unique Packers tailgate option -- actually, even with or without the game involved -- you can now get together with your buddies for a few hours or the entire day at Curly Lambeau's actual cottage overlooking Green Bay's bay. How's that for putting a new spin on the Lambeau experience?

Turns out the cottage was purchased a number of years ago by the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. It's available for a minimum of 4 hours for $125 or the whole day (no overnights, though, sorry) for $175. What a deal!

The cottage is set up for meetings, teambuilding experiences, etc. It has a brick-laid fireplace, a small kitchen, and restrooms (those might come in handy, eh?). There's an outdoor barbecue and picnic area overlooking the bay. Sweet.
