NFL Week 18: Packers vs. Vikings Preview & Prediction

Soooo...Packer fans...we were just a bit off in our prediction for last week. Yowza. Yes, it got within 3 points for a brief time. But, really. Not even close. The Ravens had more energy from the get-go. The Pack's run defense must have thought the game was on Sunday instead of Saturday because they were a no-show throughout the game. Embarrassing. We will spare you the details.

But with the NFC North Division title still open, the Packers decided to hand it on a silver platter to Da Bearz, along with the second seed in the upcoming NFC playoffs. For their efforts, or lack thereof, the Pack secured the seventh seed no matter what they do in the regular season finale against the ViQueens in Minnesota.

Which brings us to our preview...

The Preview

Let's be honest: this final regular season game for the Packers is much like the first game. Of the preseason. There's no way to improve their seeding for the playoffs. And with even more players hurt in last week's game — adding to the devastating tally of all the preceding games — the object, as it is in preseason, is to just get through the game without more injuries, especially to key players.

Hence, many of the starters will be held out or see minimal time on the field. Starting QB Jordan Love, who has missed the last few games as he was going through the concussion protocol, was cleared late this week. Think he will play to get some action in before the first playoff game (likely against Chicago, by the way...or possibly the Eagles)? Not a chance. QB Malik Willis? He's dinged up but under normal circumstances he'd likely go. Instead, third-string QB Clayton Tune got the word on Thursday that he will start the game, the second start of his brief NFL career. What about the running game? Josh Jacobs? With the injuries he's dealt and played with all season, he's a no-go. RT Zach Tom? Nope. There are others.

Now, let's also remember that the Packers bye week was a looooong time ago in Week #5. So these guys deserve a break. Playing for pride, sure, and a double-digit winning record again. But a loss won't hurt as much as losing more players to injury.

The silver lining is that this will be a chance to see what some of the younger backup players can do. At least there's that. Plus, not sure if you heard the late-breaking news of the week (kidding!): the Packers claimed one-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs off waivers from the Cowboys. He might actually see some limited playing time. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley indicated that they were working with him to get him up to speed on some of the language and schemes used on defense. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

As a sign of how tight things are from a personnel standpoint, reports indicate that the Packers have added receiver Jakobie Keeney-James and guard/center Lecitus Smith from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, and tight end Drake Dabney and linebacker Jamon Johnson were elevated from the practice squad to the game-day roster. Whether "signed" or "elevated", these are some new names to watch for Sunday and likely in the playoffs.

Bottom line, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "Since Dec. 26, the Packers have placed eight players on injured reserve, signed six players from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and claimed two players off waivers from other teams." Now, every team deals with injuries, we got it. But...yowza. None of this is how you want to roll into the playoffs. Particularly with a three-game, and potentially four-game, losing streak at play. Crikey.

Do we even need to bother talking about Minnesota? Well, they have now won a few in row. Have a very good defense under coordinator Brian Flores. Offense is so-so, as is — on a good day — young QB J.J. McCarthy. Not really as relevant to this point of view as all that's going on with the Packers, sorry.

The Prediction

Given the circumstances, the Packers are coming into this game as anywhere from a 7-1/2 to 9-1/2-point underdog. Packer fans would probably be very happy if the game wound up being this close.

We're calling this game Packers 13 - Vikings 24.

Hope we're wrong and perhaps catch lightening in a bottle. Let us pray.

NFL Week 17: Packers vs. Ravens Preview & Prediction

Before our preview ... a review ...

The game in Chicago last Saturday night didn't turn out as anticipated, did it, Packer fans? A heartbreaking loss. Not only of the game, putting Da Bearz back in first place in the NFC North for the time being — and along with that a second seed in the NFC playoffs — but also losing QB Jordan Love to a concussion in the second quarter of the game on a hit for which the offender was subsequently fined. Backup QB Malik Willis came on in Love's place and, as he has done every time when called upon, kept the Packers in the game.

It even looked, with about 5 minutes left and up by 10 points, that the Pack would walk out of the Mistake By The Lake (i.e., Soldier Field) with a victory. But a comedy of errors, including a botched onside kick recovery by Romeo Doubs with less than 2 minutes to go — and missed opportunities over the course of the game (five trips to the red zone and only three field goals to show for their efforts) — wound up seizing defeat from the jaws of victory. Fugly. By the way, in the last two games the Packers are only one for nine in touchdowns in their red zone trips...a  recipe for defeat if ever there was one... eeesh!

Still, with Aaron Rodgers and his resurgent Steelers beating the Lions last weekend, and the ViQueens beating Detroit in a Christmas Day game, the Packers locked up a playoff berth. Currently the 7th seed, if memory serves, they could still wind up finishing as the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th or 7th seed depending on how these final two games go for them as well as others in the NFC. 

So that brings us to tonight's game. So let's see what lies ahead, shall we?

The Preview

The first thing to note by way of the preview is that QB Jordan Love has been ruled out for tonight's game as he is apparently still in the league's concussion protocol from last week's game against Chicago. Since he practiced a couple days this week there was a great deal of optimism that he would be available tonight. But ... not. Backup Malik Willis will be taking the snaps, despite also having suffered a shoulder injury against Chicago late in the game. No doubt head coach Matt LaFleur saw the handwriting on the wall as the week went on and has schemed his offense to make the most use of Willis' own talents while giving Willis a full week to also be prepared to play against Baltimore, despite missing a practice with an illness; illness is hitting the Packers' locker room, btw, as both guard Aaron Banks and receiver Savion Williams were downgraded to questionable because of illness. Oy.

The question about who will be Willis' backup inevitably arises: practice squad quarterback Clayton Tune will be in uniform tonight, wearing #19. The Packers have the option of signing him to the 53-man roster or elevating him to the game-day roster. Either way, let's hope Willis makes it through the game unharmed and keeps Mr. Tune carrying the clipboard throughout.

RB Josh Jacobs is expected to return to the field this evening despite the knee issue which has hindered him the last few weeks. Of course, he had a costly fumble at Chicago's 2-yard line last weekend that would likely have sealed the win for the Pack had they gone on to score there either by TD or FG. Jacobs was, for whatever reason, held out the rest of the game with Emanuel Wilson carrying the bulk of the load from there on. It will be interesting to see how LaFleur divides the carries, especially with more of a run-centered approach with Willis at the helm.

Now, the Ravens will also be without their starting QB, Lamar Jackson, who is dealing with back issues. In his place, veteran backup Tyler Huntley will be behind center. As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article by veteran Packers reporter Tom Silverstein reminds us: "When he last played the Packers, on Dec. 19, 2021, Huntley led the Ravens from a 14-point deficit to the cusp of victory in place of Jackson, who was out with an ankle injury. He completed 28 of 40 passes for 215 and two touchdowns and ran 13 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Down 31-30, coach John Harbaugh chose to go for the win, but safety Darnell Savage broke up Huntley’s 2-point conversion pass to tight end Mark Andrews. Huntley has shown the Ravens don’t have to change their offense when he's in the game." So...the Packers defense still needs to show up.

That is especially the case in trying to defend against RB and full-on rushing load Derrick Henry. What is he: 6'2" and 250 pounds? Something like that. As big as or bigger than many linebackers. But the Ravens also have RB Keaton Mitchell who received the majority of carries in their last game. They will attempt to pound the Packers' defense and wear down the front. If the Packers can't contain Henry — or Mitchell — in could be a long night on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field.

The Prediction

Following the downgrading of Jordan Love to being out for tonight's game, the point spread went from the Pack being favored by 3-1/2 points to (at the time of this writing) 2-1/2 points. Obviously the marquee matchup between Love and Jackson at the time the NFL flexed the game to tonight has fallen by the wayside. Now, it's who wants it more? The Ravens are still fighting for their playoff lives while the Packers still — believe it or not — have a shot at winning the NFC North and securing the #2 seed in the NFC playoffs ... yeah, it could happen. Why not? Not many breaks have gone the Packers way this season so perhaps they get one for a change. Some fans are calling for the team to rest some players who could use a couple weeks off to be ready for the playoff run. But, again, until Da Bearz win their two remaining games, the NFC North title is still in play. So ... play.

This time of year and in northeastern Wisconsin one must always take a look at the weather forecast. Via sportingnews.com: "According to AccuWeather.com, the temperature will sit around 34-35 degrees the entire game, which isn't bad for this time of year. Adding to that, both teams are accustomed to playing in cold weather. Wind and precipitation won't be a factor, either, as there is a zero-percent chance for the latter and wind gusts will only reach a high of about 12 MPH." So, no worries about weather impacting the game.

We're calling this one Packers 20 - Ravens 17.

2025 NFL Week 12: Packers vs. Vikings Preview & Prediction

After two frustrating home losses, the Pack got back on the winning side of the ledger with their trip to the Meadowlands to take on the NY Giants last weekend. With a final score of 27-20, the Packers did what they needed to do against an inferior opponent.

Of course, as we know, so far this season the Packers have played down to the level of their opponents. Many reasons for that, but at least during the second half of the Giants game, head coach Matt LaFleur took the reins off the offense a bit and allowed QB Jordan Love the opportunity to go downfield, with good results. Now, there were still far too many dropped passes by both offense and defense, but in the end they did enough to win by 7. We had predicted a final score of 20-13 so we had the margin correct just not the tally. So it goes.

Let's now take a look at Sunday's game at Lambeau Field against the ViQueens ... the first of five NFC North Division games in the final remaining seven games of the season. Like many, we're of the view that backloading this many division games is not a great thing for the schedule. But it is what it is and it will definitely determine playoff seedings.

The Preview

The ViQueens swept the Packers in last season's two matchups, and they have won two straight at Lambeau Field. That's just wrong on so many levels, isn't it, Packer fans? Of course, they had a better quarterback than J.J. McCarthy directing the offense then, too.

The young QB, as most do, is struggling; he may yet turn into a good QB but right now ... not so much. Let's pray his coming out party isn't today. If the Packers want to get some takeaways today, McCarthy should be good for an INT or two. The Vikes aren't horrible, of course, they do have playmakers. And, as we all too well know ... the Packers seems to have it in them so far this season to let lesser opponents hang around far too long and give them the opportunity to win with a field goal.

We don't see that happening today.

There are now seven games remaining in the regular season, five of which including today, as we noted earlier, will be against NFC North Division opponents. This is where you can make or break your season.

Luckily for the Packers, since becoming the starting QB, Jordan Love has really come on in the second half of the season...right where we find ourselves. That started to emerge last weekend vs. the Giants. It should continue today, with or without Josh Jacobs at running back. (The early word is Jacobs is out, as are LB Quay Walker and WR Matthew Golden among the notable inactives.)

Love will have nearly a full array of receiving targets available today. Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks will share the running back duties. Matt LaFleur should be able, based upon last week's game and the unavailability of Jacobs, to open up the game plan more than he has in the earlier portion of the season. Granted, the issues with the offensive line are still there. But play-action and going deep earlier in the game to stretch the defense can help the running game, too. And might we see a special package or two for backup QB Malik Willis if the situation warrants it? Don't be surprised after what Willis again showed in very limited playing time last weekend when Love was out for a few plays with a left shoulder injury.

The Prediction

The current odds favor the Pack by 6-1/2 points. If the Packers defense plays as they have, and both receivers and defensive backs catch the ball when it comes their way, the Pack should win this one. And it shouldn't come down to whether or not now-beleaguered and still semi-injured (?) kicker Brandon McManus can make a field goal or extra point. We see the Packers taking this game with rounding-into-form play on both sides of the ball. In Week 12, it's about time, right?

2024 NFL Season Wildcard Weekend: Packers vs. Eagles Preview & Prediction

Before we get into a look at Sunday's Wildcard Playoff game vs. Philadelphia, a brief look at last weekend's game vs. Da Bearz.

We had a prediction of a not-at-all-close win for the Pack. Well, a funny thing happened. Or a not-funny thing, actually. Chicago won. On a last-second field goal. No double-doink here. As my good friend, Billy Da Bearz Fan, texted after the game: "This was my Super Bowl." Yup. The Packers, for the second straight game, came out flat, did not get a fast start, looked disjointed still on offense, and failed to make rookie QB Caleb Williams uncomfortable in the pocket. And when the Packers D needed to get a stop at the end — where we have seen this before? — they couldn't do so, setting up Da Bearz for a game-winning field goal with 2-seconds on the clock. Oh, let's also not forget the entire punt coverage team of the Packers got faked out by a decoy returner — on the opposite side of the field from where the punter told his teammates he would be directing his punt — only to see that punt returned for approximately a 96-yard punt return. You can't make that stuff up. The difference (one of several) leading to the loss. Oy.

Packers QB Jordan Love needs to have a big game today vs. the Eagles for the Packers season to continue.

The Preview

All in all, losing to Da Bearz in the season finale was not the way we hoped the Pack would go into the playoffs. Worse, losing two consecutive games to end the season to finish 11-6 (which, by the way, was exactly where we saw the Pack winding up in our preseason preview) and still not playing a complete game in all three phases of the game, doesn't build confidence looking ahead.

Plus, the Packers lost deep threat WR Christian Watson not only for the playoffs but for a good chunk of next season, as well, after a non-contact injury, torn ACL. QB Jordan Love left the game with an elbow injury on his throwing arm. He's been practicing this week so it is expected that he will be good to go against Philly. Backup QB Malik Willis also injured his throwing hand during the game and lost feeling in his time replacing Love. But he says he's good to go, too. Of course, CB Jaire Alexander is done for the season, as we know all too well. But other players are stepping up, including rookie LB Edgerrin Cooper, from whom the Packers will need a big game today along with the rest of the defense.

While the Packers are obviously one of the top teams in the NFL as evidenced by both their record and playoff spot, they also have been an enigma this season. They have a record that would have won several divisions outright, yet finished third in the strongest division, the NFC North, because they couldn't beat either the Lions or the ViQueens once each let alone twice. They were 11-6, as noted, with 5 of those losses against the Lions and ViQueens (2 each), Da Bearz (once) and ... the Eagles in the opener in Brazil. The combined points on those losses? Not much. They've been in each of those games, just couldn't close them out. Slow starts, dropped balls and missed throws, turnovers, time management. If the Packers hope to come away with the upset win today, they can't have any of those occur, separately much less together.

The Packers will need a balanced attack offensively, relying on RB Josh Jacobs and the offensive line to pound and open up the Eagles defense for Jordan Love and his receivers to move the ball in chunks. The latter will not be easily accomplished as Philly has the number one-rated pass defense. Not ideal. But if the Pack can consistently move the ball and keep QB Jalen Hurts and RB Saquon Barkley on the sidelines than on the playing field, that will increase the Pack's chances for an upset.

Now, a reminder that the Eagles are one of the top teams in the NFC and NFL and rank ahead of the Packers in most statistical categories. Today, the Packers defense will try to contain a rested Barkley, who sat out last week's finale. Fresh legs. Oy. They will also need to get pressure on Hurts, who was removed from the league's concussion protocol on Friday. He did get a practice or two in, but he may be rusty coming into the game today and the Pack needs to take advantage of that and perhaps generate a turnover early, especially.

That's a theme that came through on many pundits previews of this game: the Packers need to get a fast start. Some even noted that the game may very well be determined in the first quarter. Where the Packers have been able to get up early, they usually won; where they have not, the opposite was true.

Going against a team the likes of Philly, the Packers really need to play their best game of the year. Put the stumbles of the last two straight losses behind them and see this as an entirely new season. Be physical. Be fast. Be precise. They need to be the Green Bay Packers team that fans have believed them to be all season. The talent is there in all three phases of the game. Time for the players to put up or head to an early offseason.

The Prediction

Most pundits have the Eagles winning this game. They do have the home field advantage, of course. Philly is a tough place to play so the Pack will be playing not only the Eagles but the Eagles fans, as well. You know, the Philly folks who go to the airport to boo landings, as the great Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker, is known to say.

Oddsmakers have installed the Eagles as 4-1/2 point favorites at the time of this writing, down from 5-1/2 just a day ago. The over-under, depending on who you may be looking at, has that set at between 45 and 48; have seen both numbers tossed about.

While we are hopeful the Packers will finally put together a complete, four quarters game and pull off the upset, we really haven't seen them yet this season beat a team that's ahead of them in the win-loss record. And in the season finale, they couldn't even beat Da Bearz. So we are not optimistic.

It goes against our Green 'n' Gold-colored instincts to pick against the Packers. But looking at everything ...

We're calling it Eagles 30 - Packers 24. Hope we are wrong. Very wrong.

2024 NFL Week 9: Packers vs. Lions Preview & Prediction

The Lions come to Lambeau.

But first, a quick recap of last weekend's win at Jacksonville. Real quick. Because I was traveling and unable to actually see the game. (I know, I know...) Only heard afterwards that QB Jordan Love left the game with a groin injury and backup extraordinaire Malik Willis stepped in and implemented a game-winning field goal drive in the closing seconds. Kicker Brandon McManus booted his second game-winning field goal since being signed to the Packers a few weeks ago. In other words, a win. And that's what it's all about.

The Packers are now 6-2 and the above-mentioned 6-1 Detroit Lions visit Lambeau Field today with the NFC North lead on the line, as well as potential playoff seedings down the road. Not a disaster if the Pack drops this one. But we all know a win is better than a loss no matter at what point of the season.

A blast from the past: Packers running back Ryan Grant takes it to the Lions in 2007 at Lambeau Field. The Packers won 34-13. The running game will factor strongly into today's game as windy and rainy weather is expected and QB Jordan Love may be limited in his mobility.

The Preview

Arguably, the two top teams in the NFC face off at Lambeau Field in Green Bay today for the first of their two divisional games. Both come into this game on winning streaks; the Packers have won four straight games, the Lions five. So something will give there.

Both teams have injuries at key positions. The Lions top defensive player, DE Aidan Hutchinson, is out for the season after suffering a broken leg against Dallas a couple weeks ago. The Packers QB, Jordan Love, after sustaining a sprained MCL in his left knee in the season opener and missing two games, last week sustained a groin injury during the game at Jacksonville and had to be replaced by backup Malik Willis who has done nothing but win in his three appearances for the Pack. Love is listed as questionable and a game-time decision. Also listed as questionable for the Packers are CB Jaire Alexander (knee), RB Josh Jacobs (ankle) and cornerback Corey Ballentine (ankle). C Josh Myers (wrist) is doubtful to play and S Evan Williams (hamstring) is out. Myers being out will require a shift of players along the O-line and that could be of benefit to Detroit.

The Lions have top-level, tough, offensive and defensive units and are a reflection of their head coach, Dan Campbell. They have been putting up points behind QB Jared Goff. Getting pressure on him today will be key to the Packers being in and winning this game. One point of note is that (if memory serves) this is Goff's first outdoor game this season. And the conditions are not going to be conducive (according to weather forecasts) even to a QB such as Love who plays outdoors most of the time. This could also open up opportunities for the Pack's very opportunistic defense to generate a takeaway or two, which could be the difference in today's game. But the Packers defense also needs to be on-guard against the Lions trick plays; no team does them more often — or goes for first downs on fourth downs — like Detroit. Be ready!

Regardless of Love's mobility today, the O-line is going to need to keep him upright and in the pocket so he can make his reads and on-target throws. And if Love can't go today, Willis — and a separate game plan — will have to step up as he has in all three of his prior appearances. That effort, for either quarterback, will be aided greatly by having a balanced run-pass game plan and giving the ball to RB Josh Jacobs to chew up yardage and the clock as often as circumstances allow.

Bottom line is that this game will be a grinder, especially for the Packers. Need to prevent turnovers and generate a takeaway or two. With a bye next weekend, the Pack can leave it all on the field today and have an extra week to get healthy.

The Prediction

At the time of this writing, the Lions are favored by 2-1/2 over the Packers with the over-under set at 45-1/2 points. Both sound about right. And, really, who are we to argue?

We think the weather will hold down scoring a bit, which seems to be factored into the total points for the over-under.

We're calling it Packers 24 - Lions 23.

2024 NFL Week 4: Packers vs Vikings Preview & Prediction

To the surprise of many, including Packers fans, the Pack find themselves at 2-1 after 2 amazing wins at home and on the road with backup QB Malik Willis at the helm in place of the injured Jordan Love. They've done it with creative game-planning by head coach Matt LaFleur and staff, controlled and well-executed play by Willis and the offense, and — especially last weekend vs. the Titans — a defense that dominated.

That leaves us in a game today vs. the 3-0 ViQueens at Lambeau and a chance, with a win, to actually be atop the NFC North about a quarter of the way into season. Who would have imagined it when Love went down in the closing seconds of that game against the Eagles in Brazil? Even without Love, the Packers have demonstrated they can win in a number of ways. Rushing, through the air, getting takeaways and sacking the opposing QB. All of those qualities will need to once again be on display today.

The Preview

On offense, Minnesota's QB, veteran Sam Darnold, is having a good season to date. Rookie QB J.J. McCarthy, was supposed to be the starter this season, but an injury put that plan hold. Enter Darnold who is seizing his opportunity to basically resurrect his career. It helps when you have a receiver such as Justin Jefferson and an RB such as long-time Packers fave Aaron Jones among your weapons. But isn't it amazing what a change of team scenery and system can do (witness Malik Willis here, as well)?

Add to this, a stout defense run by Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores and the challenges for opposing teams are many.

But guess what? The Packers present a myriad of problems for their opponents, too, regardless of who is behind center we now know. Today, with Jordan Love expected to play for the first time since sustaining his MCL sprain in the opener, it's unknown how the injury will limit his mobility and affect the offensive scheme. Certainly Love will not be 100 percent. So what will that look like? We'll know in a few hours. Still, it is good to know that if he is ineffective or unable to complete the game that Willis can step in and the Packers will not have an automatic loss as a result.

The key to Love's effectiveness today, limited as it may be, will be the offensive line's ability to keep him clean in the pocket. And to do so without penalties which has been a real problem throughout the first 3 games. Lookin' at you, Rasheed Walker. A-hem.

The 'Queens will no doubt dial up blitzes early to test the protection and Love's mobility. That's where Packers TE Tucker Kraft played such a role last season in the game at Minnesota where he helped beat the blitzes both blocking and catching. Once again, LaFleur has had all week to game-plan for Love's abilities to beat the defense. This will really be a chess match on both sides of the ball.

Of course, the Aaron Jones vs. Josh Jacobs subscript will also be part of today's story. Nobody wanted to see Jones leave the Packers in the offseason. He's beloved in Packerland. But Jacobs has certainly stepped in admirably in terms of making up the running yards. (So has Emanuel Wilson, lest we forget, in relief.) Who will wind up making the difference in the game? Have to wait to see.

Defensively, the Packers will be challenged to cover WR Justin Jefferson and the other receivers without Jaire Alexander and Carrington Valentine in the defensive backfield who are both out for this game. Next man up, as the saying goes. The new 4-3 scheme seems to be starting to pay off with the ability to pressure the QB without constant blitzing. Darnold is not a scrambler so if the front can get to him that can create opportunities for takeaways downfield.

Another curious side note to this game is that it will be rookie kicker vs. rookie kicker. Minnesota has Will Reichard who is 5 for 5 on his FG attempts and 10 for 10 on his PATs. Packer fans know all too well that our rookie kicker, Brayden Narveson, seems so far to be missing one kick per game; the miss last week was wiped out by a penalty on the Titans. We should note, though, that all Reichard's field goals have been indoors at the 'Queens home stadium; today will be his first attempts outdoors, although the weather forecast this early in the season is certainly quite favorable from that standpoint. So if the game is tight and it comes down to a kick, who do you put your money on? Oy.

With about an hour to game time, the Packers are listed as 2-1/2 point favorites. Seems about right. We think it will be a tight game, as these games often are.

2024 NFL Week 3: Packers vs Titans: Preview & Prediction

 A brief review of last week's win over the Colts: we picked the upset.

Moving on...

Just kidding. A bit more.

The big variable in last week's game, of course, was the big unknown: how young backup QB and relatively new Green Bay Packer Malik Willis would do starting in place of injured QB Jordan Love. We knew the game plan by head coach Matt LaFleur would be changed. Boy, was it. Basically, the game plan was run. And run. And run. And the Packers did. Successfully. And the few times they asked Willis to pass, they were successful, too. Yay. "Stealing" a win some would say. We may have put it that way, too, in our preview and prediction. Still, a win to put the Pack at 1-1 as they had to Tennessee to take on the Titans.

Now, let's look at that game.

The Preview

New starting RB Josh Jacobs had a big week against the Colts. The Packers will need another big week from him against the Titans to stay in — and win — the game.

While it was a certainty last week that QB Jordan Love was out for the game against the Colts, with three days of limited practice this week, Love's status will be determined about 90 minutes before game time, according to head coach Matt LaFleur. Still, like last week, the Packers have once again elevated backup QB Sean Clifford from the practice squad to the active roster for this game. That may very well be an indicator that Love will once again be unavailable for the game vs. the Titans. We'd bet on that too.

While Willis was an unknown for the Packers last week, he performed well. Better than expected for many fans, no doubt. But Willis is not an unknown for Tennessee, the team which drafted him several years ago and from which he was traded at the end of training camp. The Titans know his pros and cons and obviously decided to part ways with him. After one game with the Packers, we're glad with their decision.

But that raises the question: what kind of game plan will LaFleur devise against a team and defense that (1) knows the Packers will once again predominately run the ball and (2) knows Willis' tendencies? For example (and as was on display last week), a propensity to throw to the right. With limited opportunities to throw, those tendencies become amplified. And predictable to defend. If we know this, so does LaFleur. We would expect him to devise additional wrinkles to exploit the Titans' defense in ways that they don't expect.

One of those ways may be to indeed throw more controlled passes. And perhaps even a few of those will be downfield. We still haven't seen the emergence of WR Christian Watson this season and his ability to stretch the defense — at least as a threat if not a reality — could well factor into Sunday's game, as will the abilities of the other receivers and tight ends to make plays when their numbers are called.

Another big day for RB Josh Jacobs and the O-line is also needed. The Titans have a decent defensive front so running will be a challenge. But the same was said about the Eagles in the first game and the Packers were able to run well against them. The line knows, according to various interviews, that if Willis is the QB they will need to continue their strong run-blocking. They also know, and have said, that if Love is able to play that they will have to make sure he "stays clean", i.e., they can't let him get hit when he's in the pocket.

The Packers defense will need to generate takeaways against the Titans offense. As Milwaukee Journal Sentinel sport journalist Ryan Wood notes in his preview of the game: "Titans quarterback Will Levis is erratic, not a threat to make plays with his legs, and plays behind an offensive line that has allowed seven sacks in two games." If the Packers defensive front can generate pressure, that will make a huge difference in the game's outcome.

The Prediction

As was the case last week, the Packers are at the time of this writing 3-point underdogs against the Titans. And as was the case last week, we're going to pick the Packers. Shocker, we know. But whereas last weekend the pick was more heart than head, this weekend we think there's enough evidence on both sides to say the Pack will emerge with a win whether or not Love is able to play. In fact, we hope the Pack decides to rest Love another week for the division game back at Lambeau against the ViQueens.

2024 NFL Week 2: Packers vs Colts Preview & Prediction

How are we feeling today, Packers fans? If you're like yours truly, probably still disappointed in the performance vs. the Eagles in Brazil. But even more so in the injury — with 6 seconds left in the game — to starting QB Jordan Love. He's out for today's game and perhaps at least 1 or 2 more games. A grade 1 or 2 MCL sprain, we've been told. Could have been much worse, granted. But still, it does give an immediate hit to the Packers playoff chances let alone the team's Super Bowl chance if they can't somehow find a way to win 1 or 2 of these first 4 games while awaiting Love's return.

But you already know that.

So what happens today?

This was NOT how we wanted to see Game 1 of the 2024 NFL Season end: QB Jordan Love on the ground in pain from a knee injury with 6 seconds remaining on the game clock. The Packers will have to find other ways to win today vs. the Colts and for perhaps the next few weeks.

The Preview

Most previews of today's game are focused, rightly so, on what's missing: Jordan Love. That's a huge piece missing and completely changes Matt LaFleur's offense. New starting QB Malik Willis has very little practical NFL experience. Supposedly, he is very athletic, can do some damage with his legs probably more than his arm although the latter attribute is noted as being "lively" in scouting reports. OK. Fine. But the knock on him coming out of college (Auburn and Liberty universities) and into his brief time with the Titans is that he has difficulty "processing" the game. That's not great. Still, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has stated that he saw progress in Willis' abilities over the last year or two. How that translates to running the Packers offense after only about 18 days in the system? We will find out today.

The game plan will obviously be slimmed down to what Willis was able to pick up during this very minimal time. LaFleur needs to give him plays that will have 1 or 2 progressions tops before either getting rid of the ball or running. We can expect the Colts defense to load up the box with 8 defenders knowing the Pack will be run-heavy in all likelihood. There may be throws to be made and Willis will have to make them, as well as use his legs when that opportunity presents itself. How well Willis has been able to establish any connections with the receivers through practice...who knows? Running backs Josh Jones and Emanuel Wilson will need to help out, and the O-line will have to play at a an extremely high level today, and without the penalties we saw in the opener (yeah, we're looking at you, Rasheed Walker).

Of course, the Packers defense will have to keep things close. They generated turnovers in the first game but the Packers were not able to take advantage of them beyond field goals. That was a big reason the team came up short against Philly. Special teams — particularly the new kicker — will need to make ALL his FG and PAT attempts; can't leave any points on the field as was the case last week...points that may have made the difference.

The Predication

It's the Pack's home opener, so there will be a lot of energy in the stadium. There will also need to be a lot of energy on the part of the Packers once they take the field. It's gotta be all gas, no brake.

The Colts are favored by 3 points at the time of this writing.

Our heads tell us this game will go the Colts way for obvious reasons. But our last-second feeling is that LeFleur will figure out a way to have the team execute just enough to steal a game they probably shouldn't win.
