Corey Dillon to the Pack?

The latest rumors start thusly: a former Packers personnel guy (i.e., George Koonce) mentions in a radio interview that the Pack could be adding a big-name offensive player sometime soon. No names mentioned. This then gets picked up on by ProFootballTalk.com's Rumor Mill section yesterday. Noting that there are just not that many big-name offensive players floating about right now, somehow the speculation started that the player could be former Patriots RB Corey Dillon, who was released by the Pats in March. At 32, Dillon is certainly on the downside of his career. Retirement can't be far off. Still, he did lead the Pats in rushing last year. Certainly has been a solid player through the years. But would the Packers make him their featured back? When the current running back depth chart includes Vernand Morency, Brandon Jackson, Noah Herron and DeShawn Wynn you have to believe anything is possible. An interesting possibility, if nothing but for a veteran presence among the youngsters. But it would also be surprising given the overall youth movement which is now prevailing on the Packers squad.

Stay tuned.

Packers Among Those Looking at Keyshawn

Randy Moss was a no-go. From the scuttlebutt going around, and to hear Packers' outgoing CEO comments about it, it seems as if the fan feeling was evenly split between those who wanted Moss in a Packers uniform and those who didn't. Now, let the Keyshawn Johnson rumors begin. According to an article in today's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Pack is among the teams expressing interest in Johnson, who was released by Carolina following the draft.

While it could be argued that Johnson is perhaps more of a high-profile name and self-promoter than performer over his career, he has been consistent in his production. According to the article, "In 11 seasons, he has 64 touchdowns, including 16 in the last three seasons. He has caught at least 70 passes in each of those campaigns." He was the #3 receiver for Carolina. It would be expected that, if the Packers did in fact land him, that he would be in the mix for the #3 spot along with a boatload of other Packer receivers who have youth rather than experience on their side.

So, here is another big name to chew on for a while. Given Packer GM Ted Thompson's tendencies...well...anything is possible...probability is another matter.

Moss as a Packer?

This rumor just in. Bill Michaels, sports talk wiz from WTMJ620-AM radio in Milwaukee, was within the last 30 minutes saying that he heard some radio station in Minneapolis is reporting that the Packers are interested in talking with...gulp...Randy Moss. Michaels made it clear he didn't know if this was true or just one of these Internet rumors that gets passed around as true when it is merely speculation. He noted that so far he was unable to confirm anything about this. So, it could just be rumor. Or, maybe not.

Certainly the Packers need another playmaker at wide receiver. Just as certainly, Moss can't wait to get out of the football wasteland that is Oakland. But Moss with the Packers? He of the goalpost "moon" fame? If Brett Favre returns for another year, Moss might indeed feel he can resume his playmaker status with a QB that actually completes passes. The question with Moss, as it has always been, is whether the baggage he brings with him off the field, to the locker room and sideline is worth what he might do on the playing field.

But, as noted in the earlier post of the day, since this is the ho-hum time of the year, at least this Moss rumor turns it momentarily into a hmmmmmm time of year.
