A flashback to Packers vs. Lions

Some special things happened during the December 2 game between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. First, the Packers won 27-20 in the snow flurries. Secondly, the Packers kept their 22-game winning streak in Wisconsin over the Lions going. Thirdly, and most importantly, it was that game that put the Pack up a full game over division rival Chicago, setting the stage for that coming Sunday's game against Da Bearz. This was the start of the Packers nailing down the NFC North. (You can read the total recap of the game here.)

Another of the special things that happened prior to the Packers vs. Lions game was the appearance by Larry the Cable Guy at the official Packers Tailgate Party. Larry was making his last stop on a tour promoting the Wild American Flavor Sweepstakes on behalf of Prilosec OTC Wildberry. Larry, you see, is a frequent heartburn sufferer (who knew?). So this was a natural for him. He also met up with former Packers' nose tackle, Gilbert Brown, who showed him the ins and outs of how tailgating is really done.

Packers - ViQueens Game 2 Preview

Perhaps this post should be subtitled, "The Day the Earth Stood Still: Brett Favre Returns to Lambeau Field." Others have taken to calling this day Favre-a-Palooza and Favreaggedon. OK, headbanging...yes, the ultimate end-times battle...um, no. Sure, the game will likely be another ratings winner for Fox Sports. They are supposedly going to even new lengths to hype this game via a "Favre cam," a camera dedicated to following Favre all over the field, including the sidelines.

The question which has dominated Wisconsin sports media all week, both print and broadcast, has been how the fans will react -- should react -- when Ol' #4 enters the playing field. The growing consensus seems to be that, as there will be no individual introductions of ViQueens players, fans should -- as they usually do -- boo vociferously the entire 'Queens team, including Favre, when they enter onto the Frozen Tundra. Yes. Definitely. And, just as vociferously, cheer the Pack -- and especially, Aaron Rodgers -- when the players are introduced.

On ESPN, the pundits discussed how Favre will handle the game. Favre admits to being nervous. Not surprising. Tom Jackson said Favre's comments about his current team being the best he's ever played on -- and thus disrespecting the Reggie White-led Super Bowl teams -- really left fans with a bad taste in their mouths (paraphrasing)...as if there wasn't a bad taste there before.

Former Packers LeRoy Butler and Gilbert Brown spoke to the Favre situation and comments recently as well. Butler said "If you're not in Green 'n' Gold then I don't root for you." Brown, speaking to Favre's "best team" comment on ESPN radio earlier this week, said Jared Allen "couldn't hold Reggie White's jockstrap." Gilbert always did have a way with words. When asked if he would look forward to sacking Favre if he had the chance, he said he would definitely do so. "I wouldn't do the 'Grave Digger' on him (Brown's post-sack celebration move) but I would fart on him." Thank you, Gilbert. May we have another?

Anyway, lots of verbal banter on both sides of things. But to the Packers' players credit, they just seem focused on the task at hand. And well they should. If they beat the 'Queens today they go to 5-2 on the season and travel to Tampa Bay for what is expected to be another win next weekend, taking them to 6-2. The 'Queens, on the other hand, with a loss today will be 6-2 with their bye week coming up. Thus, the Packers and ViQueens could essentially be all tied up 2 weeks from now. That's if the Pack wins today.

The bottom line today
The spread is the Pack by 3, the old home field advantage line. The teams are a little different than when playing a few weeks ago. The Packers are arguably a bit deeper, especially on the offensive line and defensive backfield. The ViQueens are arguably a bit weaker, particularly in the defensive backfield and at receiver. The Packers need to reprise the great defensive job they did on 'Queens RB Adrian Peterson.

But they need to find a way to get pressure on Favre. Interesting stat: the Packers blitzed on just 16.7% of passes in the first meeting in Minnesota and the results, as we know, were not good; you can't give Favre time to throw. Last Sunday in their game at Pittsburgh, the Steelers blitzed Minnesota an estimated 60% of the time. Result? Steelers got to Favre and got a win. It's a definite balancing act for Packers defensive coordinator, Dom Capers. S Atari Bigby was out for the Pack last time around and there were major communication breakdowns in the defensive backfield. It's been bandied about that that was one of the main reasons Capers didn't blitz more in that game: he just didn't trust the backup safety, Derrick Martin, to be in proper cover positions. But Bigby's back. LB Aaron Kampman has begun playing some down pass rush positions and getting to the QB like the good ol' days. Rookie LB Clay Matthews shows he knows how to create some problems. If ever there was a time when the defense can show that the last couple games against mediocre opponents weren't just flukes, this is it.

I think the offensive line will help Ryan Grant -- and maybe even Ahman Green -- to get some runs going; that will help the passing game. I believe that they will do a better job protecting Aaron Rodgers. And I believe the Packers defense will do enough to keep Peterson and Favre in check.

Favre is wearing that funky purple. As Michael Corleone in The Godfather II told his brother Fredo after a betrayal, and we can say to Favre (until the time he returns in his retirement glory to Green Bay, of course): "You're dead to me. You're nothing to me now; you're not a brother, you're not a friend; I don't want to know you or what you do." Boo every time Favre touches the ball. Let him hear the wrath of Lambeau and Lombardi!

It will be a close one, as most of these games are. The home field advantage will count for a lot today. In fact, it might just be the difference.

We're drinking the Green 'n' Gold kool-aid again, Packers fans. We can do no less. Packers 20 - ViQueens 17.

And the #9 pick is...B.J Raji!

Packers' GM Ted Thompson couldn't have a bigger smile on his face. If in fact it was the case as noted here earlier and as reported by Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Packers beat reporter, Bob McGinn, that Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree was the highest rated player on their draft board, then seeing Crabtree drop to them at #9 had to be a dream come true.

But apparently, need rather than best possible player won out this time. Boston College nose tackle B.J. Raji is the Packers' pick at #9. Not that Raji isn't a great player. Or that he doesn't fit a real need.

A few days ago we would have been thrilled to have Raji drop to us at #9. Then the Crabtree talk started swirling. Definitely he'd add an exciting element to an already good receiving corps.

But a good nose tackle to anchor the defensive line in the new 3-4 scheme had to be at the top of the need list. To get a top player at a spot of top need...you have to like the pick...even if you might not agree with it. Although apparently, for one of the rare times in his tenure as GM, Thompson was actually cheered by those attending the Draft Day party in the Lambeau Field Atrium when the pick was announced. When this was pointed out to Thompson during his press conference immediately after making the pick, Thompson said, "They must be getting soft." Ya gotta like Ted's deadpan humor.

The pundits on ESPN definitely thought it was a great pick for the Packers, too. Former QB Steve Young said that in the years when the Packers and 'Niners were matched against each other, Gilbert Brown wrecked havoc upon them, thus showing the impact a good nose tackle can have. We all know how good Gilbert was. Let's hope that Raji matches if not exceeds "The Gravedigger" over the course of his career.

From the Packers official website: "Raji started 37-of-49 games at Boston College, recording 105 tackles (59 solos) with 12.5 sacks for minus 78 yards, 32.5 stops for losses of 136 yards and four quarterback pressures."

The Packers have one more pick to make today -- #41 overall -- barring any of Ted's wheeling and dealing.

Oh, and for those fans who voted in our poll and said that the Pack would trade out of the #9 pick...nope. Not this time. But you can now tell us whether or not you like the pick of Raji. Just vote in the poll in the righthand column anytime today or tomorrow.

Favre salutes his old center, and gets some fan love, too

Brett Favre presented his old center, Frank Winters, for induction into the Packers Hall of Fame at last night's banquet, held in the Lambeau Field Atrium. As a result of the Packers laying down some ground rules for the media -- which, amazingly, seem to have been respected -- and Brett focusing on Winters and the two other inductees, Gilbert Brown and Al Treml, things went off seemingly without a hitch.

According to one report, "When Favre and Winters entered the Lambeau Field Atrium, they were met with the loudest and lengthiest of cheers from the packed, sold-out crowd. Not a single jeer or boo was heard."

It's still unclear, though, whether there was any chit-chat between Brett and Ted Thompson despite their sitting only two tables away from one another.

Brett also received the 2007 MillerCoors (new merger for those not keeping up on the beer biz) MVP award for setting NFL records in touchdowns, passing yards, completions and attempts. Reports say "he received even more cheers and then an enthusiastic standing ovation."

Another report stated that "Favre made a point of embracing the Packers’ storied past. 'That’s the thing with Green Bay, it’s a special place,' said Favre. 'There’s a lot of tradition. You think of the Packers, you think of all these great names. To be a part of that … is a special thing.' From a public relations standpoint, Favre was on his game. He even wore a sport coat for the occasion, so you knew this was no ordinary night."

Brett in a sport coat, sans tie, but still...you have to wonder whether his feelings will change if there's no resolution to the standoff. It seems clear, though, for now, that Brett is able to separate his feelings for the Packers and the fans from his feelings for GM Ted Thompson. So if nothing else, we can hold on to that. For now.

Favre expected to present Winters tonight

As previously mentioned here, and plenty of other places, ol' #4 is supposed to be in Green Bay to present his former center, Frank Winters, for induction into the Packers Hall of Fame tonight. (Can you say "awkward"?) All indications are that he's still set to do so, with wife, Deanna, also expected to attend. Other inductees are Gilbert Brown and Al Treml.

Presenters also typically meet with the media the afternoon prior to the evening's induction banquet. Will Brett show up for that part of the weekend? Just in case he does, the Packers have already made it clear to the media who might attend (do you think there might be just a few extra reporters there?) that Favre will talk only about what he will say about Winters.

Let's see how that works out, shall we?

Tony Dungy's view
If you want to hear what one of the more articulate members of the NFL coaching fraternity has to say about the Favre-Packers situation, Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy made a few comments on a Chicago sports station yesterday. Interesting take on things from a former player and one of the more thought-full coaches in the league. Go here to check to check it out.

The poll that we've been running for the last 10 days or so has now closed. Approximately 61% of those responding indicated that they felt the Packers should take Brett back and make him the starter; 23% percent said the Packers should try to talk him into staying retired; and 15% said to trade him to a team outside the division (rounding means the total does not equal 100%). Interesting that it seems like a lot of the media pundits in the last few days seem to be moving to the notion that if Brett asks for reinstatement the Packers will trade him. While still acknowledging the argument of how Brett has earned the right to decide where he wants to go, it's also obvious the Packers still own his rights and would not let him depart without getting something in return for him. That's business. Which is the part of the equation the players always bring up in asserting their supposed rights. What's a fair argument on their side is also then a fair argument on the part of management: it's a business. It's just sad -- as Tony Dungy said (see above) -- that Brett decided to play this out in public. That changes everything...and not for the better.

Will Winters be left in the cold by Brett?

One of the many intriguing subplots of this whole Favre-will-he-won't-he mess is this coming Saturday night's Packers Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Certainly, Brett will have his own induction one day, not only in the Packers Hall of Fame but the NFL's as well, of course. But this weekend's ceremony will see the induction of Al Treml, the Packers' video director from 1967 to 2001, Gilbert Brown, "The Gravedigger" ('nuff said), and Frank Winters, center extraordinaire for 11 years with the Pack. Bart Starr is presenting Treml, Santana Dotson is presenting Gilbert, and -- get ready for it! -- Brett Favre is presenting Frank Winters. Or at least was scheduled to present Frank Winters. As of the time of this blog post, there's no report one way or the other whether Brett will in fact show up to present his old center for induction.

It is a sad note to what should be a real moment in the sun for these inductees that the spotlight will likely not be on them as it should be this weekend, but will instead be on Brett and his drama. If Brett shows up, the story will be about him. If Brett doesn't show up, the story will be about him.

Treml, Gilbert and Winters deserve their honors and they deserve the focus to be on them. Let's hope that the Favre situation somehow moves to a resolution this week so that the new Packers Hall of Famers get their due.

Jolly Busted
Overlooked for the most part this last week was the news that defensive lineman Johnny Jolly was busted in Houston July 8 on felony charges of possessing at least 200 grams of codeine. According to the Houston Chronicle report, Jolly is scheduled to appear in court on July 22.

Jolly was lost for most of last season with a rotator cuff injury and was being counted on this season to take up some of the slack in the loss of Corey Williams to the Browns. Now? Maybe not. According to reports, he could be suspended by the NFL just for the arrest alone. Not good.

The Packers released this statement on the matter: "The Packers are aware of the report involving Johnny Jolly. This is a legal matter and we still are in the process of gathering information. We have no further comment at this time."

You know it's slow when...

Zzzzzz...Zzzzzz...Zzzzzz...

That's pretty much been the sound around Packerland these days. Not much going on. As is evidenced when a couple of the stories reporters are writing these days have to do with Herbert "Whisper" Goodman (remember him?) and the defunct NFL-Europe. Really. That's been about it. Oh, there was also former Packers center Frank Winters talking about Favre's retirement. And then there was an announcement about the Packers Hall of Fame banquet. So...I know you're on the edge of your seat...without further ado...

Whisper
If you are starved for news that is even remotely tied to the Packers, then you'll be glad to know that a former Packers RB -- the one with arguably the best nickname ever -- is now setting his sights on becoming a world mixed martial arts (MMA) champion. Herbert "Whisper" Goodman is a rising star in the MMA world. He has an 8-3 record and, if you want to see him in action and happen to be near Milwaukee, you can see him headline tonight (Sat. May 17) at State Fair Park in a MMA event called Gladiators Fighting 52 "Thunderdome." Or, you can just read about ol' Whisper here.

NFL-Europe
As to the demise of NFL-Europe -- which for the last 15 years gave us hardcore football fans a fix in Spring and early Summer -- and its impact upon Packers' scouting and player personnel programs, you can read more here.

"Bag-a-Donuts"
Former Packers center Frank Winters was interviewed on 620WTMJ radio recently about Favre's retirement, etc. Worth a listen. And, by the way, Winters' "Bag-a-Donuts" nickname isn't bad either is it? That was a fave of John Madden, too.

Speaking of Frankie Winters, he's going to be inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame along with Gilbert "The Gravedigger" Brown -- man, there's another great nickname! -- and video director Al Treml, who regrettably has no nickname...as far as we know. Winters' snap partner, Brett Favre, will do the honors of presenting him for induction. Bart Starr will be presenting Al Treml. Santana Dotson will do the honors for Gilbert. Another Packers Hall of Famer (that's the Packers Hall of Fame not the NFL, to be clear), center, and now radio game analyst Larry "The Rock" McCarren will emcee the event, which will be held July 19 at the Lambeau Field Atrium. By the way, if you were planning on getting tix...nope. Already sold out.

In addition to the induction of Winters, Brown, and Treml, this year's FAN honoree, Richard 'Ike' Eisenhauer, will also be recognized.

Geez, is there anyone that doesn't have a nickname?
